Simple Analytics

Active

Simple Analytics is a cloud-only web analytics service that records page views and events without cookies or other browser storage and, according to the vendor, keeps data in the Netherlands. Strengths

  • The vendor states that it uses no cookies, no other browser storage and no fingerprinting, collects no personal data and drops the IP address from every request.
  • Simple Analytics states that website data never leaves the Netherlands.
  • The visitor’s country comes from the browser’s time zone, so the IP address is not used for location.
  • Page view data from Google Analytics 4 properties can be imported, including pages, sources, devices, countries, browsers and operating systems.
  • Besides a WordPress plugin, the vendor publishes integrations for other platforms, such as Next.js, Nuxt and Google Tag Manager.

Watch-outs

  • There is no self-hosted edition: the tracking scripts are public under the MIT license, but the service runs only on the vendor’s servers.
  • Events, the goals dashboard, automated events, the Stats API and email support require a paid plan, and data older than the free plan’s history period is deleted.
  • The pricing slider is labeled in pageviews, but usage is measured in data points, which count page views and events together. Each additional user on the Simple plan is charged separately.
  • Location is recorded by country only, the page-load ID resets on every page load, and the feature list shows no bounce rate or session length.
  • Ad-blocker bypass, a data proxy, IP range blocking, the Admin and Export APIs and multiple teams for agencies are listed only for Enterprise.

Who it suits

Simple Analytics can suit sites that need page, referrer and device reports without cookies, and that want their data kept in the EU without running a server. The dashboard is a single page that needs no configuration, which can fit owners of blogs, documentation or marketing sites who want to check traffic rather than build reports.

The free plan is intended for hobby sites; its limits are shown under the entry price above. Businesses that need events, goals, a longer history or the Stats API use the paid Simple plan, which includes one user and up to ten websites. Organizations with procurement, single sign-on or data warehouse requirements are directed to Enterprise.

Teams that need funnels, city-level locations or reports on sessions across pages should check the feature list above first.

Setup

Simple Analytics is installed with a single script tag, which the documentation suggests placing at the end of the page body on every page; an optional noscript image records visitors without JavaScript. Page views in single-page apps built with frameworks such as React, Vue or Angular are recorded automatically, and hash navigation can be tracked as well.

Custom events are sent with the sa_event function; event names may contain letters, numbers and underscores and are converted to lower case. Outbound links, email clicks and downloads need the separate automated events script. On WordPress, the vendor’s plugin works right after installation. There is no server to set up, because the service runs only in the vendor’s cloud.

Moving from another tool

Simple Analytics can import Google Analytics 4 properties through the importer in its dashboard. Only page view events are imported, with the page address, source, device type, country, browser and operating system, plus page views, users and engagement time; other events and the user data Google collected are discarded. The import stops at the first page view Simple Analytics recorded for the site, and the vendor states that it never overwrites data it has already collected. If your Google Analytics data covers several hostnames, you choose which ones to import.

Custom events from Google Analytics are not carried over; in Simple Analytics, you track them with the sa_event function or the automated events script.

Questions and answers

How does Simple Analytics count unique visitors?

It uses the referrer instead of cookies or fingerprinting: a page view counts as a unique visit when there is no referrer or the referrer is a different website. Moving between pages of the same site, going back or forward and reloading a page do not count as new visits.

What does the free plan leave out?

Events, the goals dashboard, automated events, the Stats API, email support and removing the badge require a paid plan. Data older than the free plan’s history period is deleted.

How is usage measured for billing?

In data points, which are page views and events combined. With monthly billing, the fee follows your usage, based on the previous month and then on the average of the previous three months. With yearly billing, you estimate your traffic and set a limit; if traffic goes over it, you have a week to raise the limit before the vendor raises it for you.

Can I host Simple Analytics on my own server?

No. Simple Analytics is offered only as a cloud service; its tracking scripts are public under the MIT license, but there is no self-hosted edition of the service.
