Strengths

Builds a SHA-256 signature from the IP address, user agent, site ID and a salt that changes at midnight UTC instead of setting cookies, so visitors are counted per day.
Traffic from the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and the UK goes to servers in Falkenstein, Helsinki or Nuremberg, which remove the IP address before anything is sent to the US, the vendor says.
Every plan includes unlimited email reports, CSV exports and analytics history for as long as you subscribe. Reports go out weekly on Mondays or monthly, for one site or several.
Bot detection is on by default and combines known bot user agents, data center IP ranges and suspicious headers, and a toolbar icon shows how many requests were blocked.
The site firewall blocks or allows pages, IP addresses, referrers, domains, countries and event names, and blocked pageviews do not count toward the plan.

Watch-outs

Custom events count toward the monthly pageview allowance, and so does every API request, including requests that create or update sites.
Anonymized analytics are stored on US infrastructure for every customer, and the vendor says the data cannot be hosted locally.
No free plan is offered, and the 7-day trial takes a credit card at sign-up, with the first invoice charged when the trial ends unless you cancel.
Funnels are not part of the product, and other people cannot get their own logins yet: the documentation says user accounts are being added, so dashboards are shared by link.
Outbound link clicks, file downloads and form submissions are recorded only after you add event code, and the documentation gives JavaScript examples for each.

Who it suits

Fathom Analytics is a hosted service with plans sized by monthly pageviews, and every plan includes at least 50 sites, with packs of 50 more available in the billing settings. The vendor has a separate page for agencies: client sites share one allowance, each client can get a password-protected dashboard or a scheduled email report, and a site can be transferred to the client’s own Fathom account.

The service counts visitors without cookies; see what “cookieless” means here. According to the vendor, traffic from visitors in the EU is processed on EU servers, and the anonymized records are then stored in the US.

It is a harder fit if you need funnels or want to run the software on your own server, because Fathom is offered only as a hosted product.

Setup

Create a site under Settings with Add site, and Fathom shows a single script tag that carries the site ID in a data-site attribute. Paste it into the head section of every page. On WordPress, the Fathom Analytics for WP plugin adds the tag, can exclude logged-in user roles and can show a shared dashboard inside the admin area. The documentation has guides for other platforms, including Webflow, Ghost, Shopify, Next.js and Google Tag Manager.

Attributes on the tag switch on single-page app tracking or respect Do Not Track, and events are sent with fathom.trackEvent from your own code. There is no self-hosted version, so there are no server requirements.

Moving from another tool

Fathom imports history from Google Analytics 4. In the site settings, open Imports, choose New import and Google Analytics (GA4), sign in with Google, then pick the property, the domain to map it to and a timeframe: all data or a date range. Large imports can take up to 48 hours, and Fathom sends an email when they finish.

Imported data arrives as daily figures without events, and it cannot be filtered. Choose dates that do not overlap with data Fathom already collected, or those days are counted twice. An import can be deleted without touching Fathom’s own data.

Questions and answers

Does Fathom Analytics use cookies?

No. According to the documentation, the script sets no cookies, and each visitor gets a SHA-256 signature built from the IP address, user agent, site ID and a daily salt, so a returning visitor counts again the next day. The vendor says no consent banner is needed for its analytics; whether that holds for your site depends on the rules that apply to you.

What counts toward the Fathom pageview limit?

Pageviews, custom events and API requests, added up across all sites in the account. Occasional spikes do not stop collection. If usage stays well above the plan, Fathom emails you to upgrade and, if the overage is not resolved, can lock dashboard and API access while it keeps collecting data.

Is there a free Fathom plan?

No. Fathom offers a 7-day free trial without limits on pageviews or features. A credit card is required at sign-up, Fathom sends a reminder before the trial ends, and the first invoice is charged on the seventh day unless you cancel.
