What changes when you move off Hotjar

For Hotjar this is a relocation page rather than a shopping list. The vendor states that Hotjar merged into the Contentsquare group on 1 July 2025, that new accounts can no longer be created, and that its website redirects to Contentsquare. Existing customers move in phases, the first group contacted from 26 August.

The move runs on a fixed clock. A 30-day transition has both platforms collecting through the existing Hotjar tracking code. At the end the subscription becomes the Contentsquare Growth plan unless the account owner opts out before the deadline in the notification email. Hotjar then stops collecting, the account turns read-only for 90 days, and after that it is deleted with its data. Sites arrive in Contentsquare as projects and stay included for 12 months.

The history does not travel. The FAQ says heatmaps, recordings, funnels, dashboards and saved analyzes remain in Hotjar, and it asks you to export anything you want to keep; masking and suppression settings do carry over. The separate route to Contentsquare Free carries even less: no data migration, a new tag on your pages, and replays kept for 30 days rather than 365.

What to check before you switch

Your own deadline. The opt-out date sits in the notification email, and the vendor says the decision is final once the 30 days pass.
What you can take out. Recordings export as a CSV or XLSX list of session metadata, up to 100,000 rows per file; video files cannot be exported, although a single recording can be turned into a highlight and downloaded. Heatmaps download as a JPG image or a CSV of the click, movement and scroll maps. Survey responses come as CSV or XLSX. Trends and funnels only produce a short link to share.
How much history is left. Recordings and heatmaps are kept for 365 days from capture, so a year is the most any export can hold.
Which account you keep. If you do move, the help centre warns against deleting the Hotjar account afterwards, because that stops the new tracking from working.

What a web analytics tool will and will not answer

The second table holds tools of another kind for an arithmetic reason: heatmaps and replay is the smallest category in this directory. Those tools reconstruct what one visitor did on a page. A web analytics tool counts pages, visits and sources for everyone, and keeps those numbers for years rather than months; the ones that recognise nobody between visits are on the cookieless page.

The swap is worth considering when the dashboard you actually open is the traffic one, or when the data has to sit in the EU. It answers nothing if your work starts with watching a session.

Which of these can import your data

No tool on this page reads Hotjar data, and the vendor’s own path does not carry it either. Fullstory, Crazy Egg and Microsoft Clarity all start counting on the day their script goes live.

What they do document points elsewhere. Crazy Egg connects a Google Analytics 4 property and pulls aggregated dimensions and metrics into its Web Analytics dashboard, keeping the 2,000 largest values per dimension and no raw events. Microsoft Clarity connects one Google Analytics property per project and shows that data inside Clarity, a live link rather than a copy of history. In the second table, Rybbit reads Umami, Simple Analytics and Plausible exports, and TinyAnalytics reads Google Analytics 4 plus files from the same three tools.

Questions and answers

No. The vendor states that new Hotjar accounts can no longer be created. Existing accounts continue until their own transition date.

Does my Hotjar data move to Contentsquare?

No. The FAQ says heatmaps, recordings, funnels, dashboards and saved analyzes stay in Hotjar and recommends exporting what you need first. Your masking and suppression settings do carry over to the new project.

How long can I read my old reports?

Ninety days after the switch, in read-only mode, and then the account and its data are deleted. If the owner opts out in time, the Hotjar subscription continues unchanged.
