How pricing works

Hotjar is closed to new customers. Hotjar Ltd merged into the Contentsquare group on 1 July 2025, and the Contentsquare page about Hotjar states that it is no longer possible to create a new account on Hotjar. The Hotjar Plans article in the help center redirects to the Contentsquare pricing page, so no current Hotjar price list is published. What follows is how the help center describes billing for accounts that already exist.

Hotjar charges per site, not per account. Each site carries its own Observe plan for recordings and heatmaps and its own Ask plan for surveys, and the two can sit on different tiers. The bill is the sum of the paid plans across all sites. A subdomain can share the tracking code and limits of the parent site, or become a separate site with its own subscription.

Observe plans are measured in daily sessions. A session begins when a visitor opens a page carrying the tracking code and ends after 30 minutes without activity, or after four hours at most. Above the daily limit Hotjar samples: it captures the number of sessions the plan allows, spread evenly through the day, and a traffic coverage widget shows the share it covers. Once it is used up, no new recordings or heatmap data arrive until the next reset. Ask plans run on a monthly response allowance, reset on the first of each month and counted separately from sessions. Funnels, Trends, console error tracking and the Hotjar API sit on the Observe Scale plan.

One billing cycle and one payment method apply to the whole account, monthly or yearly. A mid-cycle upgrade is charged pro rata at once; a downgrade applies from the next cycle. Cancelling means downgrading a site to Basic, the free tier that existing accounts can still use, and the paid plan runs to the end of the cycle. Paying yearly in the app by card or PayPal adds a discount before VAT and cannot be reversed until that year ends.

Can I still sign up for Hotjar?

No. The vendor states that new Hotjar accounts cannot be created; the sign-up link leads to Contentsquare.

What happens to an account that pays for Hotjar today?

The move to the Contentsquare Growth plan is being rolled out in phases, with the first customers contacted from 26 August. Each account gets 30 days with both products collecting data, after which the subscription switches unless the account owner opts out. The billing date stays the same, the first Contentsquare charge falls on the next renewal, and the vendor says the price may change. The Hotjar account then stays readable for 90 days before deletion.
