Strengths

Recognizes devices by a hash of user agent, IP address and project with a salt that rotates at midnight UTC; the privacy policy says it sets no tracking cookies and stores no IP addresses.
The script tag tracks pageviews, visit duration, referrers, devices and location, and data-track attributes on HTML elements send custom events without extra JavaScript.
The overview reports unique visitors, sessions, bounce rate and session duration, and its Sources widget breaks traffic down by UTM source, medium, campaign, term and content.
Notification rules post to Slack, Discord or a webhook when a matching event arrives or when a session completes a funnel.
An export API returns raw events and chart data to clients with read access, and a hosted MCP server lets AI assistants such as Claude or Cursor query your analytics.

Watch-outs

Without identify calls, the anonymous ID changes every 24 hours, so, as the documentation notes, a visitor who returns on ten different days counts as ten unique visitors.
Pageviews are stored as screen_view events, so they count toward the monthly event volume together with custom events and outgoing link clicks.
After an account reaches its monthly limit, OpenPanel keeps collecting events, but charts show no new data until you upgrade or the next billing cycle starts, according to its limit notice.
Session replay is off by default and has to be enabled per project, and recordings are kept for 30 days.
Docker images built from every commit are reserved for paying supporters, so other self-hosted installations update from tagged releases.

Who it suits

OpenPanel combines web analytics with product analytics: besides pageviews and traffic sources, it has funnels, retention, user profiles and revenue tracking, and it can record session replays. OpenPanel AB in Stockholm runs the hosted service, with data on Hetzner servers in Germany, and the code is available for self-hosting under AGPL-3.0.

Hosted plans are priced only by the number of events per month. The pricing page lists unlimited websites and apps, users, dashboards, charts and tracked profiles, which matters for teams that track several sites or apps in one account. SDKs cover websites, JavaScript frameworks, mobile apps and server-side languages.

Setup

Creating a project in OpenPanel Cloud also creates a default client, and its client ID goes into the script snippet that you paste into the head section of every page. The snippet’s options switch on pageview, outgoing link and data attribute tracking, and SDKs exist for Next.js, React, Vue, React Native, Python and other platforms. The official WordPress plugin proxies requests through your site.

To self-host, clone the repository’s self-hosting branch and run the setup script, which can install Docker and Node.js and asks about your domain, database, email and AI settings. The guide asks for at least 2 GB of RAM, with 4 GB or more recommended, and the stack includes PostgreSQL, Redis and ClickHouse.

Moving from another tool

Project settings include an Imports tab with importers for Umami export files and for the Mixpanel and Amplitude APIs. OpenPanel’s Mixpanel guide also shows how to send exported history through the server-side SDK and asks you to contact support for large migrations.

The Google Analytics guide states that historical GA4 data cannot be imported. To move from OpenPanel Cloud to your own server, the vendor offers a database dump of your data on request.

Questions and answers

Does OpenPanel use cookies?

No. The privacy policy says OpenPanel sets no tracking cookies and stores no IP addresses; devices are recognized by a daily-rotating hash of IP address, user agent and project. If you call identify with your own user ID, events are linked to that profile across devices and days.

Is there a free OpenPanel plan?

No free cloud plan. OpenPanel Cloud starts with a 30-day free trial without a credit card, and the FAQ says the vendor wants serious users and has to fund maintenance and support. Self-hosting the open-source code is free and has no event limit.

What happens when I exceed my event volume?

Collection continues, but charts stop showing new data. According to OpenPanel’s limit notice, events received after the limit are kept and become visible once you upgrade or the next billing cycle starts.

Where does OpenPanel Cloud store data?

In Germany. The privacy policy names Hetzner for storage, with backups on Cloudflare R2 in the EU, and says analytics event data does not leave the European Economic Area in standard operation. Account emails and optional AI features involve providers in the United States.
