Pirsch

Active

Pirsch is a web analytics service hosted in Germany, with an on-premise option on the Enterprise plan; its core library is open source under AGPL-3.0, but the dashboard and cloud service are closed. It stores nothing in the visitor’s browser, and plans count pageviews, custom events and a share of session extensions.

Strengths

  • Sets no cookies: according to the documentation, visitors are recognized by a hash of the IP address, User-Agent header, date and a salt, and the IP address is never stored.
  • The Standard plan includes custom events, conversion goals, outbound link and file download tracking, 404 tracking, session analysis, email reports and the Google Search Console integration.
  • Page views can be sent from your server through the API, without JavaScript on the page. The official WordPress plugin works this way.
  • Open-source proxies for PHP and Go, or a Cloudflare Worker, serve the script and its requests from your own domain, which the vendor says keeps them from being blocked.
  • Data retention is unlimited on every plan, statistics can be exported to CSV, and the REST API has official SDKs for Go, JavaScript and PHP.

Watch-outs

  • Custom events and 10% of session extensions count toward the monthly page view limit, and deleted domains keep counting until the limit resets.
  • After you reach the limit, the dashboard only shows data up to that day. Pirsch collects for five more days, then stops accepting page views until you upgrade or the limit resets.
  • Funnels, A/B testing, segmentation, custom event metrics and ecommerce revenue tracking require Plus. SAML single sign-on and on-premise installation require Enterprise.
  • The open-source part is the core Go library under AGPL-3.0. Running the whole service yourself requires an Enterprise license, priced individually.
  • The WordPress plugin needs PHP 8.1 or newer, and its directory entry lists WordPress 6.8 as the most recent version it was tested with.

Who it suits

Pirsch is a hosted service for people who want visitor statistics without cookies and with the data kept in Germany. The vendor states that it runs on German-owned Hetzner servers in Nuremberg and Falkenstein.

The vendor addresses agencies and freelancers on a separate page, and the plan features reflect that. Standard covers up to 50 websites with unlimited members, public dashboards, access links and email reports. Plus removes the site limit and adds teams, funnels, A/B testing, segmentation, custom domains and white labeling. A site can also be transferred to a client, who then takes over its billing.

On-premise installation and SAML single sign-on come with Enterprise. For how counting without cookies works in general, see what “cookieless” means here.

Setup

To add a site, click the plus icon in the dashboard, enter the hostname, subdomain and time zone, then pick an integration. The JavaScript snippet goes into the head section of every page and carries your identification code in a data-code attribute. It also records outbound links, file downloads and URL changes in single-page apps; attributes on the tag turn these off.

For server-side tracking, create an access key under Integration in the site settings and send page views to the API, directly or through an SDK. The WordPress plugin uses this route and is configured under Tools > Pirsch Analytics. On-premise installation is part of Enterprise, and the vendor asks you to contact it about requirements.

Moving from another tool

Pirsch imports historical statistics from Google Analytics, Plausible Analytics and Fathom Analytics under Import / Export in the site settings. Google Analytics is connected through your Google account; the guide still refers to Universal Analytics, but the changelog lists a Google Analytics 4 importer since version 2.7.0 (August 2024). Plausible and Fathom exports are uploaded as a ZIP of CSV files, up to 100 MB each.

Imported statistics are stored as daily figures, so filters are disabled while a report includes them and hourly views are not available. Google Analytics data can be imported only up to the day your Pirsch dashboard was created, and it cannot be exported again.

Questions and answers

Does Pirsch use cookies?

No. According to the documentation, Pirsch recognizes visitors with a hash of the IP address, the User-Agent header, the date and a salt, so a visitor can be recognized for up to 24 hours. The vendor says no consent banner is needed; whether that holds for your site depends on the rules that apply to you.

What counts toward the page view limit?

Page views, custom events and 10% of session extension requests. The count runs from the start of your billing cycle across all your domains, and domains you delete still count until the limit resets.

What happens when I reach the limit?

Your dashboard access is limited to data up to the day you reached it, and Pirsch keeps collecting for five more days. To avoid a gap in your statistics, upgrade within those five days; otherwise access returns when the limit resets.

Is there a free plan?

No. Pirsch has a 30-day free trial without a credit card, which ends earlier if your sites reach 100,000 page views. If you do not subscribe, Pirsch stops collecting data for your sites, and the dashboard shows data up to the end of the trial.
