Plans are sized by sessions, data is kept in a US or EU data center chosen when the project is created, and a user ID is kept in first-party cookies.

Strengths

Events you define later, such as clicks on one particular button, apply to autocaptured data going back to installation, because Heap records interactions before you name them.
Funnels, journeys, retention and influence reports are part of every plan, including Free, according to the pricing page.
The Pages view shows pageviews, sessions, time on page, bounce rate, exit rate and landings, grouped by an automatic page type that merges similar URLs.
Dashboards can go out by email daily, weekly or monthly with optional CSV attachments, chart alerts reach email or Slack, and a public dashboard link can carry a password and an expiry date.
Tracking requests, and the script itself, can be routed through a proxy on your own domain with the ingestServer and sdk.domain options in the snippet.

Watch-outs

The tracking code sets first-party cookies, including a user and session cookie that lasts 13 months minus one day, and heap.js 5 can keep that data in local storage instead.
Once a plan’s monthly session limit is exceeded, Heap keeps the data but asks you to upgrade, and you cannot view the data again until you do.
Free shows six months of data history and Growth 12, while Pro and Premier can extend it to 36 months with a paid add-on. CSV exports are limited to paid plans.
For bot traffic, the help center suggests a segment built on known bot IP addresses, which you maintain yourself. Session replay, heatmaps and error analysis are paid add-ons for Pro and Premier.
Public dashboard links are available only in the US for now, and the WordPress guide has you paste the snippet into the theme’s header.php file rather than install a plugin.

Who it suits

Heap captures page views, clicks, form changes and submissions automatically, so events you define later apply to data collected since installation. Contentsquare completed its acquisition of Heap in December 2023, and Heap plans and accounts continue to work as before.

Plans are sized by sessions. Free covers up to 10,000 sessions a month with funnels, journeys, retention and six months of data history. The pricing page aims Growth at start-ups and Premier at teams in large organizations, and it publishes no price for any paid plan.

Region-specific storage, unlimited projects and data warehouse integration are Premier features. Heap uses cookies by default; see what “cookieless” means here.

Setup

At signup, Heap creates a Main project with Production and Development environments. Paste the snippet before the closing head tag and replace YOUR_APP_ID with the ID of the environment that should receive data, which is listed under Account > Manage > Projects. New projects are added on the same page, where you also choose their storage location.

On self-hosted WordPress, the guide adds the snippet to header.php through Appearance > Theme Editor and recommends a child theme; the method does not work on WordPress.com. Heap also has guides for Google Tag Manager and for site builders such as Wix and Squarespace. Live data feed, under Data, shows incoming events so you can check the installation.

Questions and answers

Does Heap use cookies?

Yes. Heap’s tracking code sets first-party cookies, and the user and session cookie of heap.js 5 lasts 13 months minus one day. The current SDK can keep that data in local storage instead, which still leaves an identifier in the browser. Heap says session replay is covered by your cookie disclosure and consent policy for analytics.

What happens when I exceed my plan’s session limit?

Heap keeps collecting. The pricing page says data is neither dropped nor throttled, but you receive an email asking you to move to a larger plan and must upgrade before you can view your data again. On the web, a session ends after 30 minutes without a pageview.

Is there a free Heap plan?

Yes. The Free plan covers up to 10,000 sessions a month and includes core analytics charts, funnels, journeys, retention, SSO and six months of data history. Growth, Pro and Premier have no published prices; for Growth, Heap gives an estimate after you sign up and install the snippet.

Where does Heap store data?

In a US or an EU data center. When you add a project, you choose its storage location, and the pricing page lists region-specific storage as a Premier feature. The data center of a project appears in brackets in the project picker, for example us-east-1.
