Shopify Stops Running Script Tags on Non-Plus Order Status Pages August 26: The Additional Scripts Box Froze a Year Ago

Shopify’s Additional scripts box has not accepted an edit since August 28, 2025, on every plan, Plus and non-Plus alike. What changes on the Order status page on August 26 is narrower than the trade coverage suggests: script tags for non-Plus stores stop running there, the same day both the Order status and Thank you pages must be upgraded. Nothing about the checkout page itself is dated to that day.

What changes on Shopify’s Order status page on August 26?

On August 26, 2026, script tags stop running on the Order status page, and the Thank you page, for stores on a non-Plus Shopify plan; Plus stores lost this on August 28, 2025. The same date is also the deadline for non-Plus merchants to upgrade both pages away from checkout.liquid and additional scripts. The editing box itself has been locked since August 28, 2025, so nothing changes there on August 26.

The box froze a year ago

Shopify’s architecture reference for checkout.liquid states it plainly: “checkout.liquid and additional scripts were sunset for the Thank you and Order status pages on August 28, 2025.” That covered every plan. Merchants on non-Plus plans have not been able to add or edit a script in that box for a year, regardless of what happens on August 26.

A second freeze predates even that one. Since February 1, 2025, Shopify has blocked apps from creating new script tags scoped to order_status or all. The editing door closed first. The execution door for non-Plus stores closes on August 26.

Plus and non-Plus ran on different clocks

Four dates govern this rollout, and Shopify keeps them separate by plan:

Date Event
February 1, 2025 Apps can no longer create script tags scoped to order_status or all
August 28, 2025 Additional scripts box goes view-only on every plan; script tags stop running on Plus stores’ Order status page
January 2026 Plus stores’ Thank you and Order status pages begin auto-upgrading
August 26, 2026 Script tags stop running on non-Plus stores’ Order status page; deadline to upgrade both pages

Plus stores absorbed the execution change almost a year before non-Plus stores do. The editing freeze, unlike the execution freeze, never distinguished between plans.

What Shopify says to use instead

Shopify’s upgrade guide is specific about the replacement path: “Use blocks and web pixels to recreate customizations to the design and functionality of your Thank you and Order status pages. Use app pixels to continue tracking customer events.” Blocks and web pixels recreate customizations to design and functionality; app pixels take over the tracking work additional scripts used to do inline.

elsop covered a related change earlier this month, when Shopify’s GA4 integration gained four events. Whatever pixel or tag manager a merchant runs after August 26, attribution still needs consistent campaign parameters feeding it; elsop’s own tool lets marketers build campaign URLs with consistent parameters before traffic ever reaches the Order status page.

What the coverage asserts and the docs don’t

Several agency posts describe August 26 as an automatic wipe: every non-Plus store’s tracking pixels gone by default and its pages replaced with no action required. Shopify’s guides describe something more conditional. The auto-upgrade language is scoped every time it appears: Plus stores from January 2026, stores on the Pause and Build plan, and stores that pause. A separate sentence, sitting inside the guide’s section on reverting, promises an auto-upgrade only to stores that upgraded once and then reverted, if they have not upgraded again before August 26.

None of those sentences describes a non-Plus store that never upgraded, never paused, and is not on Pause and Build. For that case, Shopify’s guide states a deadline to upgrade, not a promise of what happens automatically if a merchant does nothing.

Shopify’s public changelog carries no entry marking August 26; the days around it list a tax-calculation change, a Payments activity report, and a bulk staff CSV import. The date sits in Shopify’s help and developer documentation, worded as a deadline for merchants and an execution date for developers, not as an announcement. Whether an unmodified non-Plus store’s Thank you and Order status pages are replaced automatically after August 26, or simply stay in place without their script tags, is a question the guides answer only for the plans and states they name.
