How pricing works
PostHog is billed by usage, product by product. Analytics, session replay, feature flags, error tracking, surveys, the data warehouse, data pipelines and the rest each meter their own unit: events for analytics, recordings for replay, requests for flags, exceptions for error tracking, responses for surveys, rows for warehouse data. Every product carries its own free monthly allowance that resets each month and applies whether or not a card is on file, so a bill appears only for the products that go beyond their own allowance. Web analytics is not metered separately; it shares the events of product analytics.
Two details change what an event costs. Anonymous events, which the web library sends by default, are charged at a lower rate than identified events, and an event becomes identified once a person profile exists, which happens after an identify or group call. Feature flags are charged per request, and a local evaluation call counts as ten requests.
The plans are built around the same allowance.
- Free needs no card and is not a trial. It carries the full monthly allowance of every product, unlimited team members, one project, one year of data retention and community support. Usage halts at the allowance, which the vendor presents as protection from a surprise charge.
- Pay-as-you-go keeps the same monthly allowance, removes the ceiling on usage, and raises the account to six projects and seven years of retention, with email support.
- Platform packages are separate subscriptions added above usage. Boost adds unlimited projects, white labeling, enforced single sign-on and a HIPAA business associate agreement; Scale adds faster support targets and SAML; Enterprise adds role-based access control, a dedicated account manager, training, a custom agreement and payment by invoice, and is priced on request.
There is no trial, because the free allowance renews every month. Billing limits can be set for each product: once a limit is reached, ingestion stops and the data that arrives afterwards is lost, which is also what happens on the Free plan above the allowance. Alert emails go out at 80 and 100 percent of a billing limit and of a free allowance. Annual plans and volume discounts are arranged with the vendor’s sales team, and early-stage startups can apply for credits through the startup program. Running PostHog on your own servers is free under the MIT license and is officially unsupported, so it is not part of these plans; see the PostHog card.
