How pricing works

Clarity has no tiers, no paid edition and nothing to invoice. The pricing page states that the product is free forever, that you will never run into traffic limits and never be asked to upgrade, and that heatmaps, websites and team members are unlimited. With no bill there is no trial, no card and no renewal date.

There is still an exchange. The support documentation describes Clarity as a data controller for the data it collects, so the terms of the exchange live in the privacy documents rather than in a price list, and that is the part worth reading before installing.

Because money is not the constraint, the constraints that remain are practical ones:

  • Data is kept for the site owner’s use for up to 30 days from the moment of recording.
  • A single visitor’s data cannot be removed on its own; the FAQ says the whole project has to be deleted.
  • The data export API allows ten requests per project per day, reaches back one to three days, accepts three dimensions at most and returns up to a thousand rows, without pagination.
  • In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland a site has to pass a consent signal to Microsoft. Without consent the Clarity cookies cannot be used, and features that depend on them, such as session recordings and funnels, are affected.
  • The terms of use say Clarity should not be used on sites or apps aimed at people under 18.

Everything the product does comes at the same cost of nothing: recordings, click, scroll, area and conversion heatmaps, dead and rage click detection, segmentation filters, smart events, Copilot summaries and the Google Analytics connection.

Questions and answers

What does Microsoft receive in return?

Behavior data. The pricing page says Microsoft processes anonymous data about user behavior to improve the machine learning models in many of its products and services, and names Clarity as one of the ways it gathers that data. Whether the exchange suits a given site is a question for its own legal and privacy review, and the answer depends on the jurisdiction and on how consent is handled.

Does the free product sample traffic?

Microsoft’s documentation says it does not, so recordings and heatmaps cover the whole of a site’s traffic, and neither the number of sites nor the number of team members is capped. The constraint is time rather than volume: data stays available for 30 days, and the export API reaches back one to three. A site that needs a longer history has to export and store it elsewhere. The Microsoft Clarity card lists what the product measures.
